The Leatherne Bottel

We opened in July with a brand new team and a modern British menu.

The beginning

Sally Albin re-opened the restaurant with Head Chef Adam Hague taking over from previous operators Rossini who stopped trading in May.

Rather than close the restaurant over the summer we chose to do a light makeover and leave the major refurbishment until January when the restaurant is historically quieter.

Our people

Sally worked at the restaurant for several months last year as a consultant and stepped in when the opportunity arose to give it a fresh start. Sally has always worked in or alongside hospitality, most recently as marketing director at Michelin starred L’Ortolan in Shinfield. She helped organise the Goring and Streatley Food and Drink Festival last year and was previously a member of Goring Gap Boat Club.

Our kitchen is in the hands of Adam Hague, previously head chef at The White Oak in Cookham where he gained the restaurant 2 AA rosettes and a Michelin Bib Gourmand. Adam has a wealth of experience working in high profile kitchens including The Chesil Rectory, Lainston House, Holbrook House and The Running Horse near Winchester.

He’s distilled the knowledge gained over the years into his own distinctive style focussed on bold, clean flavours using seasonal British produce.

Also in the kitchen is Adam’s right hand man Vitor Miller Queiroga, who has been with us from the start, and Callum Stoddart.

Connie Galliano-Hale recently joined us and manages the front of house making sure our guests have a wonderful experience from start to finish. Our other full time front of house team member, Piers Baron, brings his creative flair to everything from cocktails to arranging the flowers.

Over the summer we have had a fantastic team of part time staff, all local, who have helped us get up and running. Most are leaving us soon and heading back to uni so we will be recruiting again.

Why we do what we do

Our aim is simple, to give our guests a wonderful experience with great food and drink in a relaxed, friendly environment.

Everyone who works at The Leatherne Bottel falls in love with the place and we all want to play our part in making it a commercial success and a magical place for people to enjoy for years to come. As an independent start up company we are limited in resources but make up for that in our experience, enthusiasm and passion.

Every day we look for ways to improve and get closer to our vision for the restaurant and in January we hope to make some more substantial improvements.

It has been awesome to meet so many guests who have been coming to the restaurant for 20, 30 even 40 years and seen many people come and go. We love to hear about the history and will be sharing some on the blog. All photos and anecdotes are gratefully received.

The experience

Dining at The Leatherne Bottel is all about relaxing away from the hustle and bustle and enjoying time with family and friends.

With a few different menus on offer there are plenty of ways to experience The Leatherne Bottel.

Our new 6 Course Tasting Menu has just been introduced and this runs alongside the A la Carte. On weekdays from Wednesday to Friday we offer a fixed priced lunch menu and on Sunday evenings a relaxed small plates menu designed for couples or groups of friends to share. We’re also planning all sorts of music and food events for the next few months so please do check back regularly on the website or social media.

Our menus are complemented by an interesting wine list which includes a selection of low intervention, organic and English wines. We also stock locally produced drinks and offer a great choice of cocktails.

Long term

The Leatherne Bottel has a truly exceptional location right on the banks of the Thames in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Being in tune with nature is very much a part of the long term vision for the restaurant. Seasonal menus using local produce, development of a kitchen garden and a move towards being a more sustainable business with minimal impact on the environment. It will take time but we are very excited for the future.
